No one ever dies on Planet Claire, because they don’t have heads.

The year before i was born, the B52’s made their first album. Damnit, this is amazing. Sure, you can call them New Wave, but that’s sort of like just saying Rotary Connection were Soul, or The Incredible String Band  was Folk. You’re stretching the limits of generalization is what i’m saying. These bands were fucking weird.

These are technically songs, they have words and guitars and drums, sure, but it’s more like performance art than music. It’s GWAR. No, no, hear me out. GWAR is fantastic, but it’s the costumes and storyline that really make them tangible, interesting, legitimate. The actual hairdo, the 50s surfabilly, the pure camp, Fred Schneider being himself, Kate and Cindy making crazy animal noises in the background, boys in bikinis, volcanoes erupting, there’s a moon in the sky called the moon, and their version of Downtown can only be described as “special.”

It’s one of those albums where you just say “i’m speechless.” It’s better than Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends because clearly everyone involved loved every moment of it and had no sense of embarrassment about anything, ever.

How do you reach the level of genius where you  shorten Uranus with an apostrophe?

If you’ve never really listened to their debut self titled album, then have you really ever said the phrase “what the hell am i listening to” honestly?

Have you?
